Cisco pitches square against Symantec, McAfee, and packet shaping vendors

Cisco quietly made a couple of product releases recently that pitches it square against established competitors in the field, including Symantec and McAfee. Cisco's Application Performance Assurance (APA) Network Module NME-APA-E3 2.0 adds Layer 7 packet shaping, while the latest version (6.0) of its Cisco Security Agent (CSA) adds an antivirus and data leakage prevention client. Cisco CSA security client runs on Windows, Linux, and Solaris - both servers and desktops. As for APA, Cisco claims APA can control more than 1,000 applications and report on its findings with 100-plus built-in reporting templates. Read more about APA and CSA at Jamey Heary's blog

  • Consumers trust PayPal more than traditional banks Submitted by Cisco Subnet on Tue, 09/30/2008

Baby boomers trust their money with alternate payment providers, such as PayPal, more than bricks and mortar banks. According to a recent survey by Cisco of 1,500 consumers between the ages of 18 and 65-plus, consumers believe non-banks can provide at-par (if not better) payment facilities than conventional banks. Consumers were also frustrated at bricks and mortar stores with complaints ranging from the checkout process taking too long, items being out of stock, and the inability to find the items they wanted. It sounds like the Internet has turned us into spoilt citizens.

  • Creeped out by Cisco's hologram telepresence Submitted by Cisco Subnet on Mon, 09/29/2008

It's one thing having telepresence making it seem that the people you're in a meeting with are sitting opposite you but what Cisco CEO John Chambers demonstrated on stage is rather creepy. Take a look at this video of Chambers on stage speaking with a life-size 'hologram' of Marthin De Beer, head of Cisco’s emerging technologies unit as they both stood 'face-to-face'.

Is Cisco the Madonna of networking? by Brad Reese

Yesterday, Ashlee Vance of The New York Times grabbed my attention in an article about Cisco transitioning from boring switches and routers into "peddling e-mail software, video conferencing systems, cable TV boxes - even furniture." However, what really caught my eye in that article was the following statement by RBC Capital Markets Managing Director - Mark Sue: "Cisco is kind of like the Madonna of networking, it is continuously trying to reinvent itself." Personally, I find the...

Drive By Hacking; A Story From the Field by Jimmy Ray Purser

I was at a customer site the other day conducting a bit of forensic analysis for an upcoming security TechWiseTV show. This customer was not happy about the SQL injection attacks some of his users were getting. He conducted training with his staff and end users, yet still, folks came back with Bots, keyloggers, etc... He was more angry then Chicago Cubs fan in October. Looking at what was going on, it appeared to be an classic drive by download attack and not a SQL injection. A drive by... 2
